Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Friday demanded of the government to give a specific schedule for upcoming general elections, saying some unwanted elements were hell-bent on derailing the democratic process in the country. Speaking at a press conference, PML-N's deputy secretary-general Ahsan Iqbal said that that the whole nation was looking forward for a change via ballot.

The nation, he said, was well aware of motives of some foreign nationality holders, who intended to take the country hostage at the behest of their foreign masters. Lashing out against Dr Tahirul Qadri, the chief of Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran, and bracketing Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain with Qadri for launching a joint venture against democracy, he said: "The man who holds a Canadian passport wants to bring a revolution with the help of a British nationality holder...This is beyond comprehension [and] they might be unaware that Pakistanis know the difference between democracy and dictatorship," he added.

Reaffirming his party's resolve to strengthen democracy, he said that the prosperity of a country was linked with democracy. "Only the nation has the right to determine what system they want via vote," he maintained. To a question about the outcome of upcoming general elections, Ahsan criticised President Asif Zardari, saying his return to power would be disastrous for the country. Besides, a hung parliament would affect the country's economic viability, he said.

"A clear mandate in favour of a single party would be panacea of all ills," he said. Answering a question about Dr Qadri's planned march next month, he said such marches would push the country towards a civil war if other political parties supported him.

About his party manifesto, he said that PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif would unveil the manifesto on January 5 next year, giving a clear roadmap to steer the country out of multiple problems.

Ahsan also commented on Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari's much-talked about maiden political speech in Garhi Khuda Bux the other day. He said that Bilawal had failed to give the much-trumpeted future vision for the country. Besides, he said that both him (Bilawal) and his father were unable to give account of their achievements in five years. They just skipped all this, as inflation, joblessness and energy shortages had made the life of the common man miserable, he said.

He said that the PPP was using the jargon of an opposition party, adding that it is better that they should play the role of opposition. On the occasion, B A Malik, a former ambassador, with 40-year-long association with PPP, announced to join the PML-N.
